The workplace of the future needs to be part of the fast-moving business ecosystem, supporting the journey to growth. The office is one of the primary arenas for collaboration and innovation. Therefore, it is crucial that the space is designed to promote this, and lighting needs to be adapted to enhance cognition and health. Today, we spend more than 90% of our time indoors, which has a negative impact on our physiological needs, according to the WHO.
“In the workplace of the future, Biocentric lighting feels like a given. Having lighting that not only allows us to see but also supports health and enhances our abilities positively is self-evident.”
Matilda Muhr Göransson, Event & Community Manager at Epicenter.
Challenges in space planning
The challenge at Epicenter, as in many other large offices, is that some rooms are located in the middle of the floor plan, without windows and access to natural light. Natural light is essential for health and cognitive ability, improving creativity, concentration, and innovation. Epicenter has had BrainLit’s Biocentric lighting installed in its bookable meeting room, appropriately named LightLab, for several years. The lighting mimics and varies like natural light in intensity and color composition throughout the day, supporting the body’s circadian rhythm and ensuring good cognitive ability and high performance. Biocentric lighting is based on solid research, mathematically validated with significant measurements, and documented effects. “In the workplace of the future, Biocentric lighting feels like a given. Having lighting that not only allows us to see but also supports health and enhances our abilities positively is self-evident,” says Matilda Muhr Göransson, Event & Community Manager at Epicenter.
Biocentric lighting for various environments
At Epicenter, there is customized ceiling lighting that is fully tailored to the room’s surface and usage. The light recipes included in the solution are developed for meeting activities. BrainLit and Epicenter have recently upgraded the lighting in LightLab with new luminaires, which was done easily without affecting the existing system installation. The standalone floor luminaire ALVEN has been chosen as a solution in the innovation house’s open workspaces.
“Both us working at Epicenter and our members find this extremely exciting! Some of the members have already expressed their amazement at how much of a difference it makes to be in Biocentric light. They generally feel more energetic and find it easier to stay focused during meetings,” concludes Matilda.
