FC Rosengård – First Woman’s Football Team in Sweden to Install Biocentric Lighting

In the gym at Malmö IP, players from FC Rosengård spend many of their most important hours. Between training sessions on the pitch and intense matches, this is where strength is built; recovery begins – and the journey back from injury takes shape. Regardless of season, weather, or access to natural daylight, BrainLit helps ensure that conditions are optimized.

For FC Rosengård, light is no longer a background factor. It is an active part of the performance environment.

FC Rosengård’s gym at Malmö IP has limited access to natural daylight. Yet even on a grey afternoon in late February, players need energy, focus and alertness. For elite athletes, the training environment must enhance performance every day- not only when natural daylight is available.

That is why FC Rosengard, as the first woman’s team in Sweden, has invested in Biocentric Lighting from Brainlit AB.

– At its core, this is about improving performance. Elite athletes carefully evaluate every factor that can impact their performance. Biocentric Lighting is designed to support the biological systems the influence alertness, focus, sleep, and recovery – all of which are critical to elite performance and wellness, says Michael Frantzén, Business Development Manager, Sports Europe at BrainLit AB.

Biocentric Lighting recreates the dynamics of natural daylight indoors. In the morning, the light supports the body’s natural awakening and contributes to increased alertness and energy. Especially important pre-practice or pre-game. Later in the day and evening, it supports melatonin production, helping the body wind down and prepare for sleep

In this way, the light supports the body’s natural circadian rhythm and contributes to better sleep, a more stable mood, and improved overall health – critical factors for elite athletes.

The system follows a circadian pattern and can also be tailored to specific needs through so-called “light recipes,” Michael explains:

– In sports, a light recipe could mean that before a late afternoon or evening match, the team is exposed to more activating light that supports alertness and focus. After the match, the light shifts to a more calming profile that helps the body unwind, which in turn improves sleep and recovery.

– Light has both an immediate alerting effect and a longer-term role in supporting circadian rhythm. Higher-intensity, biologically active light can help promote alertness, energy, and focus when players need to be activated, while calmer light profiles can support recovery and rest, says Michael Frantzén.

Light that enhances performance and recovery – part of a holistic approach

For FC Rosengård, this investment is part of a broader effort to optimize every detail around the players, coaches, and staff.

– Our ambition is to ensure that every aspect and detail can give our players better conditions – energizing lighting is part of that. Our facilities here at Malmö IP are full of character and history, but they also present challenges when it comes to creating optimal daylight conditions. With BrainLit’s lighting, we ensure an environment that supports both performance and recovery, says Rutger Hagstad, Head of Partnerships.

Patience, rehabilitation, and the road back – with light as an active part of the training environment

In the gym at Malmö IP, Finnish defender Elli Pikkujämsä trains after signing with FC Rosengård in 2025. She joined from Racing Louisville in the American NWSL and has 35 international caps and 75 appearances in the OBOS Damallsvenskan.

Following a knee injury, patience is tested during rehabilitation – a period where structure, continuity, and the right training environment are crucial. For a player with international experience and high-performance standards, every detail matters.

The club has also strengthened its squad with another new signing. Goalkeeper Saga Andersson joined Örebro in 2025. She has already made her Damallsvenskan debut, represented Sweden at youth international level, and is seen as one of the next goalkeepers progressing into senior national team football. The signing is part of FC Rosengård’s long-term commitment to developing young players.

In the gym, Saga trains with determination to return to peak form after a concussion. For players in rehabilitation, the environment is especially important – particularly when the road back requires both patience and mental strength.

– It is truly interesting how much the right lighting affects you. Knowing that light supports rest and recovery and contributes to better sleep makes a substantial difference. For us, performance is not only about what we do on the pitch, but how well we recover between sessions, says Saga Andersson.

– I think it is incredible that we can bring “daylight” into our training facility. Combined with the team’s well-planned and effective training, it makes me feel more motivated and energized, says Elli Pikkujämsä.

Facts: Biocentric Lighting in sports

Supports rest and recovery Improved sleep quality strengthens recovery – a crucial factor for performance.

Enhances performance, reflexes, and cognitive ability Performance can increase by 8–10%, reflexes by 5%, and cognitive ability by 12% as reported by clients Exposure to biologically effective light has been associated with improvements in alertness, reaction time, cognitive performance, and readiness.

Improves team performance By supporting the body’s light needs, each player can perform at their best when it matters most.

Reduces the effects of jet lag By gradually adjusting the circadian rhythm, the light helps the body adapt when traveling across time zones.

Daylight is the most important factor in regulating our circadian rhythm – a central aspect of human performance. Biocentric Lighting recreates daylight indoors and helps synchronize the body with the correct rhythm.

Regular exposure, for example a few hours every second or third day as part of regular training and preparation, provides both short-term and long-term performance benefits – for both the individual and the team.

Facts: FC Rosengård

FC Rosengård and FC Rosengård 1917 have always been guided by two core pillars – football and social responsibility. This has been a fundamental principle since the beginning.

Current initiatives include Move by FC Rosengård, Night Football, Read Aloud, The Wellbeing Arena, Coach for Life, and Football for Life South Africa.

Each week, FC Rosengård engages more than 1,000 young people and 150 leaders in football activities in Malmö, as well as over 500 young people in other activities.

Work, health, and democracy are the focus areas of the club’s social initiatives.

As the first women’s football team in Sweden to install BrainLit Biocentric Lighting, FC Rosengård is extending that leadership into the performance environment — investing not only in facilities, but in the daily conditions that help players, coaches, and staff, train, recover, and perform. Biocentric light is an enterprise-wide force multiplier.
