In a strategic move to enhance health and optimize performance, the Calgary Flames have upgraded their core training and performance spaces at the Scotiabank Saddledome with BrainLit’s Biocentric lighting system. This advanced technology replicates the benefits of natural sunlight, addressing the critical challenge of insufficient light exposure as people today spend over 90% of their time indoors.
Rick Davis, Director of Sports Performance for the Calgary Flames, emphasized the significance of the upgrade. “In the NHL, where every detail matters, our players and staff spend countless hours indoors, often missing the vital benefits of natural light. BrainLit’s Biocentric lighting allows us to bring those benefits inside. This system ensures we have the right type of light at the right time of day, helping support peak performance and recovery.”
Kyle Harris, CEO of BrainLit, highlighted the broader impact of the technology. “Natural light is essential for everyone, but its role in athletic performance and recovery is often overlooked. By adopting Biocentric lighting, the Flames are integrating a proven solution that passively enhances energy, focus, and recovery without requiring any changes to daily routines. This approach sets a new standard for optimizing human performance in professional sports.”
“The Calgary Flames recognized the data-backed benefits of Biocentric lighting, and as a result, their players and staff passively receive optimal light exposure, with the system autonomously adjusting to their schedules, enhancing energy levels and supporting recovery based on the day’s specific demands,” said Robbie Beydoun, former professional hockey player and BrainLit team member.

As awareness grows about the role of lighting in health and performance, the Calgary Flames are leading the way as early adopters in professional sports. Teams across multiple leagues, including the Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Twins, and the Philadelphia Flyers, are also leading the way as early adopters of Biocentric lighting.
Biocentric lighting is gaining traction across industries, from professional sports to corporate, healthcare, hospitality, and education. As organizations recognize the impact of optimized light exposure, it is quickly becoming the standard for indoor environments.
Stay tuned as the Calgary Flames continue to push boundaries in health and performance, ensuring their players and staff are operating at their highest level both on and off the ice.
